Tribute from the Grandchildren

I would like to say some words on behalf of Ken’s 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren - with one more on the way - but first of all I would like to say thank you to the rest of the grandchildren for passing on all their memories of Grandad and to Auntie Jane for helping to collect them all together.

It is difficult to say in just a few words how great a Grandad Ken was, because he has given us so many fond memories that they are difficult to count. He spoilt us on big days out to Hever Castle or Badsell Park Farm, took us to Billy Bunter’s or the cinema, and down to Tonbridge Sportsground to play games of pitch-and-putt or crazy golf. Then there are the memories of taking us to watch ‘proper football’ matches and of him supporting us as we played our own. When we had to stay at home there were the epic bedtime stories, endless games or helping him out with his allotment. Whenever we were with him, he always put his grandchildren first, entertained us and made us feel loved and happy.

Grandad was a true gentleman and well respected by everyone that knew him. We won’t forget his bone-crunching handshake or the way he answered the phone (“Passey Residence! Ken Passey speaking!”). He encouraged us with our education and supported us in our hobbies. He wasn’t afraid to speak his mind and tell us what he thought. He was our role model, taught us right from wrong and even protected us from those older kids in the park by telling them to clear off (or - words to that effect)!

With Grandad, entertainment was always on the cards. And not just cards. Monopoly, Uno, Yahtzee, Bird Animal Fish… those Boxing Day games were legendary. How many times did we win the booby prize at the bowls club quiz because he’d convinced us that his answers were the right ones? And he even knew how to inject some sauce into the most mundane Pictionary clues. But above all, who could forget the games of Tippit (which nobody else seemed to have heard of and so I thought Grandad must have invented) which really brought the whole family together.

Which was what it was all about. Grandad was funny, kind and gentle, and despite there being quite a few of us, he managed to find time for us all. He leaves a legacy we are glad to be a part of. We will always be thankful for the memories he gave us and we will try to carry on following the example he set for us.

So on behalf of us all: Thank you Grandad for all the good times - Yeeeeee doggies, Chook!
